Butler finally signs, Karney to visit, Romberg gone!
After a week or more of rumours, meetings and speculation, the Rams finally secured the signature of SS James Butler. Butler had previously played under Steve Spagnuolo for the Giants, which made St Louis a likely landing spot for the free agent. Mike Sando of ESPN thinks that by inking Butler the Rams have an “emerging secondary”.
I have to agree really. Atogwe and Butler provide a solid duo while Bartell will be partnered by the somewhat disappointing Tye Hill. Hill does have scope to improve (see Webster, Corey), but will be challenged (hopefully) by Wade and King. Wade was drafted as a speedy project so he needs to start showing what he has learned, while King, a promising rookie selection, spent 2008 on the injury reserve list so will be fairly raw I’d expect. I think that if we are have high ratings on any corners or safeties and they slip, we should pounce in the second round. Its easier, in my opinion, to find a ‘big body’ for the D-Line than to pick up a truly effective late-round defensive back. I’d love to grab Utah Ute Sean Smith„ but 2.2 is probably too early, but then again, they said that of Donnie Avery!
Bill Coats of STLToday confirms reports that recently released fullback Mike Karney will visit St Louis today (Tuesday).
Karney would like to land in Arizona but he would certainly have a role to play in the Shurmur/Spagnuolo offense as a lead blocker and pass catcher.
Following the signing of Jason Brown, it was only a matter of time before Brett Romberg moved on to pastures new. His new home will be Atlanta where he’ll look to compete for a starting job…
